David Fuller.jpg

DAVID FULLER

The first thing you notice about David is his smile. But David faced a lot of barriers and financial adversity growing up in Jackson, Tennessee. After having a son, David wanted to break the cycle he was in and show his son how to live a different kind of life. So he moved to Nashville for a fresh start and came across the UpRise Nashville program. At UpRise Nashville, he proved to himself and others that he had the work ethic, confidence, and character to start a career. Today, he is showing his son how to live a new life by learning how to be a licensed electrician in the apprenticeship program at Stansell Electric. With a promising new career, a new apartment, and a new hope for the future of his son, David has a lot to smile about.

Randa Ibrahim.jpg

RANDA IBRAHIM

Fleeing persecution for their Christian faith, Randa and her family immigrated from Egypt to the U.S. in 2006. They arrived in Nashville utterly penniless. Working a job with long, erratic hours and no growth potential, Randa wanted to make a change. She dreamed of working in a role where she could care for others and make a difference in people’s lives. Randa knew she needed education to make the transition, so she joined the inaugural UpRise class to become a Certified Medical Assistant. Today, she works at Siloam Health helping to provide medical services to underserved patients, including immigrants much like herself.

BIANCA TARANTOLA

Stuck in a job with no upward mobility and a low hourly wage, Bianca struggled to take care of herself and provide for her children. She needed better health care and wanted to move out of government housing to protect her children from bad influences in the neighborhood. Bianca’s housing coordinator introduced her to UpRise, and she began the program in 2017 to experience healing from issues in her past and to gain the education she needed to make a fresh start. She graduated as valedictorian of the first UpRise class, moved out of public housing and works as a peer counselor at Strongwell helping pregnant women struggling with substance abuse.
